When asked about the prestigious science awards in the world, most of you will certainly name Nobel Prize as the sole one that occurs to you!

With human societies entering into the age of technology, it led to the rapid growth in science and technology which has continued to this day.

Various societies awarded local scientists with prestigious science awards and honours for promoting and encouraging people to do science. As a result, the culture of appreciation of scientists and scholars has expanded worldwide, with some 390 prestigious scientific awards worldwide awarded to those who have done innovative and useful activities to improve the quality of human life and improve knowledge.

Perhaps when it comes to scientific award, the Nobel Prize and the Fields Prize have garnered more attention, but there are some older and more prominent awards in science and technology that have been less known for others and are actually ignored.

Scientific Awards in Various Fields

Scientific awards are awarded not only in the fields of basic sciences but in all fields of science and technology. Some of these awards include:

  • Astronomy: Dannie Heineman Prize, Eddington Medal, and Henry Draper Medal
  • Mathematics: Fields Medal, Abel Prize, Blumenthal Prize, Wolf Prize, and Dannie Heineman Prize
  • Chemistry: Nobel Prize, Priestley Medal, Elliott Cresson Medal, and the Pfizer Award in Enzyme Chemistry
  • Computer Science: Turing Prize, Elliott Cresson Medal, and IEEE Richard W. Hamming Medal
  • Physics: Nobel Prize in Physics, Wolf Prize, Boltzmann Medal, Panofsky Prize, Max Planck Medal, and Albert Einstein Award
  • Aerospace: Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award and Ansari X Prize
  • Medicine: Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine, Wolf Prize, Elliott Cresson Medal, Potamkin Prize, and Lasker Award

In the previous blog post, you studied 5 most prestigious awards in science, which were Nobel Prize, Turing Prize, Fields Medal, Abel Prize, and Breakthrough Prize.

Below you will read 5 other top prizes in the field:

Albert Einstein Prize

Albert Einstein Prize, awarded by the World Cultural Council, includes a diploma, a commemorative medal, and $10,000. In addition to these prizes, the winners receive endorsements from the entire scientific community of the world and can be proud of their discoveries, findings, inventions and research. Any scientist can win this award. All you need to win this award is hard work and scientific dedication. Nominees can be introduced by governments, organizations, educational institutions, and prominent individuals. So, the nominees are the ones who really deserve it. The Albert Einstein Prize has a distinguished and reputable jury; the committee that selects the winner includes many scientists from different countries around the world. Many of these scientists are Nobel laureates. The award is given for the recognition and encouragement for scientific and technological research and development.

Wolf Award

The Wolf Foundation is a global foundation like the Nobel Foundation, which has been providing international awards annually since 1978 in Israel, in six areas of mathematics, agriculture, chemistry, medicine, physics and the arts. The award was founded by Dr. Ricardo Wolf, an Israeli inventor.

Wolf is said to be the second most prestigious prize after the Nobel Prize in physics and chemistry, and most of its winners also claim a Nobel Prize. Of the 26 awards that were awarded between 1978 and 2010, 14 have been awarded the Nobel Prize.

The Wolf Prize includes a Rose Bouquet, a box of chocolate, a diploma, and USD $ 100,000. Although the prize is said to be donated annually, it is not and has been given only six times between 2000 and 2009.

The winners of the prize are encouraged by the Wolf Foundation to spend a quarter of this prize for fun stuff because there is a deep belief that they, after a hard job, deserve to have fun!

In the medicine, the Wolf Prize is the third most prestigious international award after the Nobel Prize and the Lasker Prize. The Wolf Prize in Agriculture is still recognized as the equivalent to Nobel Prize.

UNESCO Award

This award is donated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to a person who has made an important contribution to the advancement of technology in disadvantaged and remote areas or in developing member countries, especially in education, engineering and industrial development. The award was first donated in 1968 to Robert Simpson Silver. The donation ceremony takes place in odd-numbered years to coincide with UNESCO’s General Conference. The prize consists of USD 15,000, an Albert Einstein Silver Medal.

Wright Brothers Medal

In the United States, numerous local awards, such as the Golden Eagle Award, were awarded to local pilots by various aviation departments in the field of aviation and piloting. In August 2003, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) launched the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award (MPA) to be recognized as a nationally acclaimed award in lieu of numerous local awards. The award is given to professional, talented and experienced pilots who have conducted 50 or more consecutive years of safe flight operations. It includes a certificate and a medal. The award is also donated to honour those who have done significant research and activities in engineering, designing, developing, or operating aerospace or space vehicles.

Lasker Awards

The Lasker Awards has been donated by the Lasker Foundation annually since 1945 and is given to those who have made major contributions to medical science and understanding, diagnosis, treatment, cure and prevention of human disease. The prize includes $250,000, and nearly 100 people who have received these honours have gone on to receive a Nobel Prize.
