2019 Highly Cited Researchers List: Computer Sciences

Every year, the Web of Science Group releases its Highly Cited Researchers list, which includes the name of scientists who produce multiple highly-cited papers. The 2019 list includes more than 6,000 researchers from almost 60 countries.

The Web Of Science Group, also known as WOS, is the largest and most authoritative comprehensive scientific citation database and the most important article database for students worldwide.

This database is a Clarivate Analytics company and the world’s largest publisher-neutral citation index. This company plays an important role in improving and pushing research forward by organizing the world’s research information.

The WOS database is an analytical tool that is very popular because of the following features:

2. Access to all cited references in each article
3. Ability to provide summarized information
4. Integrity
5. Extent of scientific subjects
6. High-quality articles
7. Validity of information
8. Weekly update
9. Time depth of information
10. Ability to search accurately and thoroughly

Web of Science released this year’s Highly Cited Researchers list on November 19. Those whose names are on the list are influential and successful researchers, with their career probably going well!

How?

The key criteria to recognize the world’s most influential researchers of the past decade as Highly Cited Researchers are publications (for the 2019 list, 2008-2018) whose multiple papers are frequently cited by their peers during the last decade and rank in the top 1% by citations for field and year in Web of Science.

WSG reviews with great care the publication records of all potential HC researchers and removes the records recognized with misconduct or excessive self-citation.

What?

Researchers are selected for their exceptional influence and performance in one or more of 21 fields (those used in Essential Science Indicators, 1 or ESI) or across several fields.

Highly Cited Researchers list in 2019 includes the following information:

• Lists 6216 researchers in different fields
• 3,725 researchers received citations for their work in one specific field
• 2,491 researchers achieved citations across several fields
• Includes 23 Nobel Laureates (a rise from 17 in 2018), three of which were announced in 2019
• Includes 57 Citation Laureates (researchers who rank in the top 0.01% of researchers by citations and are potential future Nobel prize winners).

Where?

The US remains on top; of 6216 researchers in the 2019 list, 2,737 come from the US, 203 of which are from Harvard University, which has the highest number of Highly Cited Researchers in the world.

China is following closely the US, standing on the second place in the list, ahead of the UK.

The information on the 2019 list shows a huge rise in the number of researchers from mainland China from 2018 (482) to 2019 (636).

However, the UK experienced a loss in the number of researchers, from 516 in 2019 to 546 in 2018.
