Prof. Luis Alberiko Gil-Alaña:

Inequality, Poverty “Major Challenges of Today’s Economy”

As its very prestigious conference in the field of economics, finance and management, Canadian Institute for Knowledge Development (CIKD) is holding the 4th edition of International Conference on New Directions in Business Management Finance and Economics (ICNDBM) in Istanbul Aydin University, Turkey, on February 12, 2020.

ICNDBM will host three prominent professors in the field of Economics, Finance, and Econometrics, Luigi Guiso, Luis Alberiko Gil-Alaña and Ilhan Ozturk.

CIKD’s marketing department has conducted an exclusive interview with them, on a different range of issues. Here you can read Luis Alberiko Gil-Alaña’s comments and ideas.

Regarding the importance of attending an event on Economics, Luis Alberiko Gil-Alaña said it is good to attend conferences on Economics and Finance, adding “the areas covered at the ICNDBM Conference seem very interesting to me, including Management, Marking and Banking.”

He highlighted the significance of face-to-face and in-person events, saying “despite the advancements in the technology today, to be face to face to other researchers is in my opinion important to share knowledge about the Economy, especially at times of uncertainty as is the case nowadays.”

Luis Alberiko Gil-Alaña is a Faculty Fellow of the Navarra Center for International Development and Professor of Econometrics and Quantitative Methods in the School of Economics and Business Administration at the University of Navarra.

He, who has been awarded many valuable prizes in Econometrics, including Ely Devons Prize in Econometrics, and First Academic Prize in Chile and Spain, believes that the most important experience in delivering a successful lecture to students is to keep the attention of the students. For that, he added, “I am very traditional and though I also use the most updated technologies, I also like to write down a lot of things on blackboards asking the students to participate with me there.”

Luis Alberiko Gil-Alaña received his Ph.D. from the London School of Economics in 1997, in Econometrics and Quantitative Methods. Prof. Gil-Alana has been the keynote speaker at different seminars, workshops and conferences all over the world.

Regarding the contribution and role of current and new technological methods or information in his job, Luis pointed out data availability as the clearest example.

“When I was a student of Economics and even at the time of my Ph.D. in the UK, to get access to data, even macro data was a big and difficult issue, taking days or even weeks or months to obtain them,” he noted, adding the treatment of the data, which means what you will do with all the data collected, has also changed a lot, with issues such as big data, machine learning, etc.

He further suggested that young scholars and researchers should pay attention to issues like inequality and poverty all over the world, as one of the main challenges for the future, from an applied perspective and thinking in Economics.

“Other issues like the treatment of information will be a big issue as well,” Luis added.

He pointed to topic selection and good communication as two important factors that are crucial for an organizer to attract the audience and help the conference guarantee its popularity in general and at its next editions.
