Jonathan Newton
Programmer Director, MA Programmer in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Second Language Learning and Teaching
Jonathan Newton has worked as a language teacher and teacher educator for more than 30 years with wide experience working with teachers from across Asia.
He is currently Programmer Director for the MA Programmer in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, and Second Language Learning and Teaching.
Jonathan’s research focuses on the following main areas:
- language teaching methodology and task-based language teaching (TBLT)
- teacher cognition and professional learning for language teachers
- the interface of culture and language in language teaching and learning
- language/communication training and materials design for the multicultural workplace.
Jonathan is in demand internationally as a conference speaker and has published more than 50 book chapters and articles in leading applied linguistics journals.
He has published in a range of books and in journals including: Second Language Research, The Journal of Second Language Writing, Annual Review of Applied Linguistics, System, Language Teaching Research, Journal of Pragmatics, English Language Teaching Journal, Modern English Teacher, and Language Learning
Jonathan Newton also co-authored three books,
- Teaching ESL/EFL Listening and Speaking (2009, Routledge)(with Paul Nation).
- Workplace Talk in Action: An ESOL Resource (2010, VUW Press)(with Nicky Riddiford).
- Third (to appear early 2018) co-authored with five leading international scholars, Teaching English to Second Language Learners in Academic Contexts: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. (2918, Routledge).
