Ken joined the UEA in October 2017 after eight years as the director of the Centre for Applied English Studies at the University of Hong Kong. He is a well-known researcher in the field of academic discourse, writing, and language education, and has published over 26 books and 220 papers with 33,000 citations on Google Scholar. Ken has taught English and applied linguistics in Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, and Hong Kong, and been a professor at the University of Hong Kong and UCL Institute of Education in London. His most recent books include the third edition of Teaching and Researching Writing (Routledge, 2016), The Routledge Handbook of EAP (co-edited with Philip Shaw, Routledge, 2016), Faces of English Language Education (with Lillian Wong, Routledge, 2017) and Academic Publishing (Oxford University Press, 2015). A collection of his work was published in 2018 as ‘The Essential Hyland’ (Bloomsbury, 2017). He is a founding co-editor of the Journal of English for Academic Purposes and was co-editor of Applied Linguistics. Ken is an Honorary Professor at Warwick University and a Foundation Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of the Humanities. He was a member of our scientific committee in NTELT conferences.

Research

Published 32 books and over 240 journal articles and book chapters. Many articles have appeared in the top international SCCI journals. I have 44,000 citations on Google Scholar and over 300,000 ‘reads’ on ResearchGate. I am in the top 0.5% of scholars in ResarchGate and Academia.com

He has presented papers at 235 international conferences, over 165 as a plenary or keynote speaker, and obtained research-funding of £220,000 including Hong Kong CERG and GRF awards.
