Dr. Wessam Abouarghoub joined the school in June 2013 as a Lecturer in Logistics and Operations Management, after finishing his Ph.D. studies at Bristol Business School. He holds an MSc in Shipping Trade and Finance from CASS Business School, City London University and a Ph.D. in Maritime Economics. In his thesis entitled ‘Implementing the New Science of Risk Management to Tanker Freight Markets’, he employs advanced quantitative techniques for measuring and managing financial risk for shipping freight markets and compares the suitability of such proposed methodologies against the current market practices, which are carried out by ship-owners and cargo-owners. Thus, his research interest is centered on Maritime Economics and in particular Shipping Risk Management. During his Ph.D. studies, Wessam was employed as an associated Lecturer at Bristol Business School, teaching on a variety of topics, such as Economics, International Trade, Applied Econometrics, Mats & Stats and Research Methods at both postgraduate and undergraduate levels. His quantitative modeling research and teaching are carried out using a variety of computer statistical packages such as SPSS, RATS, OxMetrics, Eviews and Microfit. Prior to launching his academic career in 2006 with an MSc in Finance and a Ph.D. in Economics, he obtained a certificate of competency from the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) in Maritime Navigation as Chief Mate/Captain. In addition, he had worked for 6 years on different types of vessels, such as tankers, general cargo, and passenger ships.
